Nayoro Kitasubaru Observatory
Don't miss the telescope created by Hokkaido University (one of Japan's largest) and a state-of-the-art planetarium!
At Nayoro Kitasubaru Observatory you can view the starry sky, which is said to be one of the best in Japan, with the naked eye, or observe various celestial objects using a large telescope with a 50cm diameter mirror. The digital planetarium, which has the latest equipment, uses two high-definition projectors to show the starry sky on a seamless 8-meter-diameter dome screen. There are also real-time images from the solar telescope, and an exhibition corner with meteorites and other objects. Another highlight is the Pirika Telescope, which, with a mirror diameter of 1.6 meters, is the second largest telescope open to the public in Japan.
